Workshops and Training Opportunities
SVSU Workshops
We offer workshops specially tailored to the needs of staff and faculty. If a department has enough people interested in a topic, we can develop and teach a custom workshop. Please visit www.svsu.edu/workshops many of our workshops are offered in-person and online through Microsoft Teams.
Not Offered by SVSU
Canvas
Canvas is a course management system that provides different tools to create/organize class content. Students access course files, submit Assignments, take online Quizzes (optional Respondus LockDown Browser), interact in asynchronous Discussions, or synchronous class meetings via Teams or EchoVideo Lecture Capture. If you are getting started with Canvas, visit our help page svsu.edu/canvashelp for resources and best practices.
SVSU Supported Technology & Teaching Tools
Lecture Capture and FERPA: When recording your class lectures, do not check grades, email, or anything confidential which violates
FERPA policy.
Synchronous (Web conferencing) Tools (supported campus wide)

Microsoft Teams (sync with EchoVideo)
Microsoft Teams Meetings in Canvas is recommended for virtual meetings without leaving Canvas. Microsoft Teams is excellent for class collaboration, online office hours, screen sharing, includes a collaborative whiteboard, breakout rooms, reactions, chat, and audio and video feedback. We recommend to set up your class in Canvas and use EchoVideo to share and embed recordings, leveraging engagement tools and analytics to identify student learning outcomes.
Zoom
Zoom is a cloud-based video communication tool offered as a paid subscription, it is not currently a University-wide solution. Zoom is best used for real-time synchronous online meetings featuring screen sharing, webcam, polling, and chat. The features available depend on the account type. If you have a pro Zoom account as well as an EchoVideo account, Zoom cloud recordings will automatically copy over to EchoVideo.
Big Blue Button (free tier only) we recommend to use Microsoft Teams
The Conferencing tool in Canvas allows you to meet in real-time and hold lectures and meetings. Recorded sessions are available for 7 days - they cannot be downloaded. Basic features include a whiteboard, breakout rooms, screen sharing, audio, webcam, and reactions.
Important Note: BigBlueButton is not recommended for asynchronous teaching. We recommend using EchoVideo Lecture Capture.
Asynchronous Tools (with screen capture)
Universal Capture software allows faculty to record on their computer or in our Lightboard Studio. Recordings can be pre-recorded or presented Live (real-time), both the instructors and students can use the built-in engagement tools in the video player that allow for interactivity between you and your students. In addition, EchoVideo features classroom capture, video and transcript editing, interactive learning, and gathers usage Analytics. Note: When faculty use EchoVideo it does not affect your Canvas course quota.
