Resetting Mac Keychain

How to Reset a Mac Keychain

Keychain Access is a macOS app that stores your passwords and account information and reduces the number of passwords you have to remember and manage.

On occasion, system password changes can lead to a broken Keychain on a Mac computer.  This often occurs when a user bypasses the prompt to update the Keychain password by clicking cancel, or by entering the wrong password.

Resetting your Mac Keychain

  1. Open Keychain Access, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  2. Choose Preferences from the Keychain Access menu
  3. Click the Reset My Default Keychain button in the preferences window.
  4. After you enter your new password, Keychain Access creates an empty login keychain with no password
  5. Click OK to confirm.
  6. Log out of computer
  7. Log in to your account using your new password. Your account password and login keychain password should now match again.
