Install SPSS

  1. Open a web browser and go to the URL, https://appsc.svsu.edu/elms/ .  You may need to authenticate
  2. Note the on-screen instructions.  You must complete all three steps to successfully use SPSS on your computer.
    1. Step 1 Uninstall prior versions of SPSS. Reboot after uninstalling.
    2. Step 2 Download the appropriate installer for your system.
    3. Step 3 **IMPORTANT** Have an email sent with an activation code and installation instructions.

  3. Click to download the Windows installer.
  4. Switch back to the software list panel and click the Send Activation Email button.
  5. Open the email so that it is available when you need to copy and paste the code.
  6. Open the installation file that you downloaded.
  7. Choose to Allow this app to make changes on your device.
  8. Read the licensing agreement and choose, I accept the terms of the license agreement. Then choose next.
  9. Select yes to install IBM SPSS statistics, then choose next.
  10. Continue reading the licensing agreement and choose, I accept the terms of the license agreement, then choose next. Again read the licensing agreement and choose, I accept the terms of the license agreement.  Choose next.
  11. The application will be installed on your hard drive. If you want to change the installation location, select Change, otherwise, click Next.
  12. When the installation is complete, you will be prompted with the option to start SPSS statistics. **IMPORTANT** You need to do this to complete your installation of SPSS and have it work correctly. So be sure to check the box next to launch SPSS statistics license authorization wizard.  Then choose done.
  13. You may see one of the following images appear when you initially start SPSS. If so, follow the steps for the corresponding image. 

    Click on Launch License Wizard.

    Click on Launch License Wizard. 


    In either case, click on the button that says Launch License Wizard and this will continue you to step 14. If you see neither of these images on your screen then simply continue to step 14 below.                                     
  14. This is an important step to get your SPSS application working correctly. Select, Authorized user license. I purchased a single copy of the product. Then choose Next.
  15. You will be asked to enter a code.
  16. Open the email that was sent to you and find the code in the email. Select and copy it.

  17. Switch back to the authorization wizard and paste the code in the code field. Do not share the code with anyone. Then choose next.
  18. You will see that the code was processed successfully. Choose Next.
  19. The expiration date for the license is displayed. Choose Finish.
  20. Use the Windows Start bar to open SPSS. SPSS will open and ask you to open a file.

Save Data Files to a Local Drive

  1. The next step is to make sure that you download and save your course files to a folder on your computer. Your teacher should tell you where your files are located. It is suggested that you download those files to a local drive.  We do not suggest that you double click on the file to open the SPSS application.  Instead, open the SPSS application first, then choose Open another file and then choose open.
  2. Navigate to your file, select it, and choose Open
  3. SPSS will process the data and open the file.
