Purpose
Many universities require password changes on a regular basis, multiple times a year. SVSU is no exception. SVSU requires password changes once per year in response to pressures from security focused legislation (GLBA, Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI, etc.) and auditors.
Policy / Procedure
Password Criteria
- Minimum length of 14 characters.
- Maximum length of 64 characters.
- Must include both lowercase and uppercase alphabetic characters.
- Must include both numbers and symbols.
- Avoid reusing part or all of a previous password. Cannot reuse the last 3 passwords.
- Avoid SVSU related terms such as "Cardinal", "SVSU" or other common terms.
- Passwords must be changed yearly.
Change Password Procedure
Users will receive the "Password Expiration Notification" email message starting 14 days before their password expires and everyday thereafter until they change their password. Instructions on how to change their password are included in the email message.
Register for Self Service Password Reset (SSPR)
You must register to be part of the password reset system. After registering, if you forget your password, go to the password change site to easily regain access to your account – no phone call or visit to the IT Support Center required.

Reset Forgotten Password Procedure
To use the “Reset Forgotten Password” option, you must first set your: a) security questions/answers, b) mobile phone number, c) email address, or d) Google Authenticator.

Account Locked Out?
After six (6) failed login attempts the users account is locked out for 10 minutes. If the user account is not reset or if they continue to have password issues they should attempt to "Reset A Forgotten Password. As a last resort they can contact the IT Support Center for assistance.
Don’t know your SVSU username or SVSU ID number?
Usernames typically consist of the first and middle initials, plus the first six characters of the last name. The SVSU ID number is seven digits including leading zeroes and is the last seven digits of the ID number printed on SVSU’s “TheCard”. The ID number is also available online in Self-Service under User Profile.
Student:
Students who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by one of the following methods:
- (Username only) Having another admitted or registered student login to the Search for Students option of the online SVSU directory and search for their name. The username is the part of the email address preceding the @svsu.edu.
- (Username and ID Number) Bringing picture ID to the Registrar's Office, Campus Financial Services Center, the Office of Admissions, the Office of International and Advanced Studies, the SVSU off-campus administration office where they are enrolled or the IT Services Support Center.
- (Username and ID Number) Calling the Office of Admissions or the Office of International and Advanced Studies to have their username and ID number re-mailed/emailed to them.
- (Username only) Calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information.
Employee:
"Employee" refers to any individual who is employed by SVSU in a capacity other than student employment.
Employees who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by one of the following methods:
- (Username only) Utilizing the "Search for Faculty/Staff" option of the online SVSU directory to search for their name. The username is the part of the email address preceding the @svsu.edu.
- (Username and ID Number) Bringing picture ID to the Human Resources Office, Campus Financial Services Center, an SVSU off-campus administration office or the IT Services Support Center. Adjunct Faculty may also bring picture ID to the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL).
- (Username and ID Number; Adjunct Faculty only) Calling the CETL to have their username and ID number re-mailed/emailed to them.
- (Username and ID Number) Calling the Human Resources Office to have their username and ID number mailed/emailed to them.
- (Username only) Calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information.
Non-SVSU Employee:
"Non-SVSU employee" refers to any individual whose association with the university entitles them to have access to certain technology services, such as Dining Services and Bookstore employees.
- Non-SVSU employees are provided their SVSU username and SVSU ID number by IT Services via email after submission and processing of an IT Services Technology Access Special Request Form.
- Non-SVSU employees who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information.
Retiree:
Retirees usernames and ID numbers should be the same as when they were employed at SVSU. Retirees who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information.
Alumni:
- Alumni are initially provided their SVSU username and SVSU ID number as a student, unless they did not have such when they were a student. In that case, they need to contact the Alumni Relations Office to have their account created.
- Alumni who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by one of the following methods:
- (Username and ID Number) Calling the Alumni Relations Office and providing ID verification.
- (Username and ID Number) Bringing picture ID to the Registrar's Office, Campus Financial Services Center, the Office of Admissions, the Office of International and Advanced Studies, the SVSU off-campus administration office where they were enrolled or the IT Services Support Center.
- (Username only) Calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information.
