Opening .heic Files on a Windows Computer

HEIC files are created by taking photos with the iPhone Camera app.

It is recommended that faculty ask students to convert photos from HEIC to JPG or take a screenshot of the image to convert it to PNG, prior to sending or submitting image files.

If obtaining a JPG or PNG version of the image is not possible, there is a website that will convert the files from HEIC to JPG for free. .

Use the HEIC to JPEG Site

This page contains privacy information, terms, security, and cookie information. Please note that this site does have a paid version, but it is not needed for file conversions. There is also an option to sign up, this is also not needed, nor is it recommended. Once converted, the files are downloaded locally to your computer where you can manage them, without needing to upload them to a folder, on the site, itself.

  1. Follow this link to the site.
  2. When grabbing images from an iPhone, plugging the phone into the USB port of the computer should prompt the phone, when unlocked, to allow the computer access to photos. You must approve this in order for it to work.
  3. Click on select images and choose the images you want. Note that some phones prevent multiple images being dragged and dropped at once. Depending on how many files you are trying to convert at once, this can create a time consuming process. To work around this, select multiple files at once, and copy them to another location on the computer. Then, when uploading the files to this site, use the copied files in the computer location, instead of the direct files from the phone. Note that the more images you select, the longer the process can take.
  4. Once you have all the files you want, click on the blue Convert to JPG button. The new image should automatically download and appear in the bottom of your browser, however if it doesn't simply click on the large blue download button to manually download it yourself.
