HEIC files are the default image format created by the iPhone Camera app.
For compatibility, faculty should ask students to convert images from HEIC to JPG before submitting or sharing files. Another simple option is to take a screenshot of the image, which automatically saves as a PNG file.
If converting on the device is not possible, students can use a free online tool to convert HEIC files to JPG.
Recommended options:
Adjust iPhone Setting to Transfer Photos as JPG
To avoid requiring the recipient to install a file conversion app, the sender should adjust settings on their iPhone. iPhone settings can be configured to automatically convert photos from HEIC to JPG when transferring to a PC. When this setting is enabled, photos sent via email or accessed through iCloud or File Explorer will be transferred as JPG files.
To change this setting:
- Open Settings
- Scroll down and tap Photos
- Under Transfer to Mac or PC, select Automatic

Use a Free HEIC-to-JPEG Conversion Website
View the I Love IMG site data security and privacy policies. While the site offers a paid version and account sign-up options, neither is required for converting files and neither is recommended. After conversion, files are downloaded directly to your computer, allowing you to manage them locally without storing anything on the website.
Use the I Love IMG Convert HEIC to JPG tool.
When transferring images from an iPhone, connect the device to your computer using a USB cable. Once the phone is unlocked, you will be prompted to allow access to photos. Be sure to approve this request.
To upload images:
- Click Select Images and choose the files you want to convert
- Some phones may limit dragging and dropping multiple files at once
- For better efficiency, copy the images from your phone to a folder on your computer first, then upload them from that location
Keep in mind that selecting a large number of images may increase processing time.
After selecting your files:
- Click the blue Convert to JPG button
- Converted images should download automatically to your downloads folder.
- If they do not, click the Download button to save them manually
