EchoVideo: Instructors: Set up an EchoVideo Assignment in Canvas

New! Students can record and embed videos in a Canvas Assignment or Discussion. To let students use EchoVideo for a Canvas Assignment, you must enable "Text Entry" so the toolbar is available to them and/or enable "File Uploads".

Overview

Set up a EchoVideo assignment or discussion so students can record and embed a recorded presentation in Canvas.

Students can:

  • Record videos on their computer or the Echo360 mobile app
  • Easily submit a video recording directly in Canvas Assignment or Discussion using the EchoVideo Deep Links Embed tool.

Set up a Canvas Assignment to record with EchoVideo

  1. Create a new assignment in your Canvas course (or edit an existing one).
  2. Type in a title for your Assignment, add instructions, and points.
  3. Set the Submission type to Online, then click the checkbox “Text Entry and/or File Uploads.”
    • Text Entry: Provides the Rich Content Editor so students can compose text and create media content. Students click the plug icon to launch EchoVideo.
    • File Uploads: Allows student to upload recordings from their device. 
  4. Set up the rest of the assignment with a due date and availability dates.
  5. Select, Save and Publish.

Create a Canvas Discussion to record with EchoVideo

  • Create a new Discussion by clicking + Discussion and choose how to set up your discussion. 
  • Students can record presentation slides and themselves right in a Canvas Discussion using EchoVideo and embed their video.
  • Using a discussion allows students to review others submissions and comment on each others videos.

Instructions for Student Recordings

Faculty feel free to copy and paste the template below into the Assignment or into the Discussion.

Instructions: 

For this assignment you will create a video recording using EchoVideo on your computer or mobile device. Add your other expectations here.

How to Create a Video:

  1. In the toolbar, find theCanvas apps tray icon looks like a electrical plug found in the toolbar of the Rich Content Editorapps tray icon.
  2. Click View all, the select "EchoVideo Deep Link Embeds." Once you have selected it the EchoVideo app it will be an available in your list.
  3. In Create Content, select "Launch Browser Capture" (record in your browser). Another browser window will open up automatically.
  4. You will need to make sure you allow permissions in your browser to record with your webcam and microphone.

Important Note: Alternatively, you can click on "My Echo360 Library" in the Canvas navigation menu. Then, select the "Create" button to launch Browser Capture. The recording will store in your personal Library.

How to Submit and Embed your Video

  1. Find the apps tray icon Canvas apps tray icon looks like a electrical plug found in the toolbar of the Rich Content Editorin the toolbar. 
  2. Select "EchoVideo Deep Link Embeds."
  3. Select "Launch Media Picker".
  4. Select your recording in the list, the most recent recording can be found by Sort by > Date Created.
  5. On the Embed options window, click "Embed". Your video is embedded in the Rich Content Editor. Click "Submit Assignment".

Tips for Success:

Important Note: If you use your own tools instead of SVSU supported tools to record a video, the IT Support Center is limited to assisting you, if you run into any issues. For technical issues, please reach out to IT Support Center at support@svsu.edu or call 989-964-4225.

  • Create a practice recording to test your audio and video quality. 
  • Record your video, referring to expectations for the Assignment.
  • You can upload media you make in another tool to your EchoVideo library.
  • It’s best practice to use the built-in recording tool Browser Capture or Universal Capture software on your computer. Alternatively, you can record a video using your Echo360 mobile app.
