New! Create and Embed Videos in Canvas using EchoVideo
Students can now record videos using a webcam, microphone, or mobile device without installing additional software.
EchoVideo is SVSU's video platform integrated with Canvas. Instructors use EchoVideo to share lecture recordings, live classes, presentations, and video assignments. Students can watch course videos, access captions and transcripts, participate in interactive activities, and create video submissions directly from a computer or mobile device.

Getting Started with EchoVideo as a Student
Access EchoVideo in Canvas
- No separate EchoVideo account is required.
- Sign in to Canvas using your SVSU credentials.
- In Canvas, your instructor may provide EchoVideo content through:
- EchoVideo course (class link).
- Embedded videos within Assignments, Pages, Discussions, Quizzes, or Modules.
Recommended Browsers: The most recent browser version is recommended for best experience. If you are a Mac user, we recommend using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. The links below provide instructions on enabling cookies in your browser.
Note: If videos are not loading correctly, try clearing your browser cache and cookies or use a different supported browser.
Access Class Recordings as a Student
Some instructors provide access to lecture recordings and course media through an EchoVideo course link within Canvas.
- Open your Canvas course.
- Select the EchoVideo link in the Canvas menu.
- Choose a class recording from the Classes list page.
Within EchoVideo you may be able to:
- Watch lecture recordings.
- Join live classes.
- Search video transcripts.
- Take notes and create bookmarks.
- Participate in discussions and polls when enabled by your instructor.

Using the EchoVideo Mobile app as a Student
The EchoVideo mobile app allows you to access course recordings, view presentations, participate in discussions, and record video assignments directly from your mobile device. Available from: Google Play or the App Store
- Access course recordings and presentations (you must access the course in Canvas first).
- Resume watching recently viewed content.
- Adjust playback speed and video quality.
- Use closed captions and subtitles when available.
- Participate in discussions and classroom activities.
- Record and upload video assignments from your mobile device.

Viewing Embedded Videos in Canvas as a Student
Many instructors embed EchoVideo recordings directly within Canvas Assignments, Pages, Discussions, Modules, and/or Quizzes.
- Click play to begin watching.
- Use the CC button to turn captions on or off.
- View and search the entire transcript
- Adjust playback speed
- Rewatch videos as often as needed.
Helpful Tip: If an embedded video is not loading, refresh the page or try another browser like Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox
Record & Submit Videos with EchoVideo as a Student
Students can create and submit videos using EchoVideo. Launch Browser Capture within an Assignment or Discussion.
- Record using your computer's webcam and microphone.
- Record using your mobile device.
- Upload an existing video file.
- Review your video before submitting.
- Wait for the upload to complete before leaving the page.
Open the EchoVideo app in an Assignment
- Click the Assignment to open it.
- Click the apps tray icon to open the EchoVideo app.
- Click View all.
- Select EchoVideo Deep Link Embeds.

- Select Browser Capture from the Create Content menu.
Open the EchoVideo app in a Discussion
- Click the Discussion to open it. Click "Reply" to respond.
- Click the apps tray icon to open the EchoVideo app.
- Click View all.
- Select EchoVideo Deep Link Embeds.

- Select Browser Capture from the Create Content menu
Accessibility
EchoVideo includes several built-in accessibility features such as a searchable transcript, closed captions, live captions for live classes, playback speed control, chapters (if added by your instructor) and an accessibility widget to support learning for all users.
Accessibility Widget: Located next to the EchoVideo player. The tool allows you to change how you view your media including: dyslexia, contrast, text spacing, bigger text, size and more. Click the "Accessibility" icon to open the widget. These setting only affect your account and how you need to view content. No one else will see it.
- Closed captions (T icon)
- Searchable transcript text (type in a keyword) side bar of the player.
- Playback speed and subtitle settings (gear icon). Save your player preferences across all devices.
- Accessibility widget with display and reading enhancements (click the Accessibility icon) on the right side of the screen.

Attending Live Classes (in-person or remote)
Helpful tip: If the class is not available, you will see a grey LIVE badge icon next the class name.
All classes being streamed live can be accessed from the EchoVideo tab in your course navigation whether you are on or off campus.
You will see all classes listed. If the class is currently live, a raspberry signal icon appears to the left of the class name, as shown for the Currently Live Class / Lesson in the figure below. Click the title to access the class.
