Attending a Big Blue Button Conference

Joining

  1. Log in to Canvas, open your course, and select the Conferences tool.
  2. Join the meeting.

  3. From the options on the screen, choose whether you will be speaking into a microphone or just listening with speakers.  Select the phone option if you have neither a mic or speakers.
  4. Be sure to ALLOW the Microphone and Camera when the browser pop-up appears.

Muting/Unmuting

The mic icon is a toggle button.  Click it to mute or unmute your microphone.  When it is blue, your mic is not muted.  When it is black, your mic is muted.

Presenting

  1. If asked to present, your instructor will need to assign Presenter rights to you.  When that happens a new icon will appear at the bottom right. 
  2. Before clicking the new, Share Screen icon, open the file(s) you will be presenting so they are ready when you share your screen.  NOTE:  If you will be presenting a PowerPoint presentation:
    1. Open the presentation file.
    2. Select the SlideShow tab.
    3. Remove the checkmark next to Use presenter view.
  3. Now you are ready to share your screen, switch back to the Canvas Conferences browser tab.
    1. Firefox
      1. Click the Share Screen icon from bottom right.
      2. Select Entire Screen from drop-down list at the top.
      3. Click Allow.

        i. Click the Share Screen icon from bottom right. ii. Select Entire Screen from drop-down list at the top. iii. Click Allow.
         
    2. Google Chrome
      1. Click the Share Screen icon from the bottom right.
      2. Click the Your Entire Screen tab.
      3. Click the thumbnail of the image on your screen.
      4. Click Share.

        i. Click the Share Screen icon from the bottom right. ii. Click the Your Entire Screen tab. iii. Click the thumbnail of the image on your screen. iv. Click Share.
         
  4. The screen is being shared when you see the conference window appearing like a series of reflected mirrors.

  5. Switch to the first file you wish to present.  If it is PowerPoint, play the slideshow and present as usual – with Presenter View off, as noted above.
  6. To stop sharing your screen:
    1. Firefox
      1. Click the button in the hover bar, at the top of the screen, that looks like a Firefox icon.

      2. This will return you to the Canvas Conferences browser window.  Click the Share Screen icon at the bottom right.

        ii. This will return you to the Canvas Conferences browser window. Click the Share Screen icon at the bottom right.
         
    2. Google Chrome
      1. Click the button in the hover bar, at the bottom of the screen, that says Stop sharing.

        i. Click the button in the hover bar, at the bottom of the screen, that says Stop sharing.
         
    3. When the instructor makes a different student the presenter, it will automatically stop your screen from being shared.
