Accessibility in Canvas

Summary

Information on the Canvas Accessibility Checker tools

Body

The Canvas Accessibility Checker is a tool that detects common accessibility errors in content created within the Rich Content Editor.

The Canvas Accessibility Checker Does NOT Check All Content

The Canvas Accessibility Checker checks for some of the most common accessibility errors, but it won't check all course content.

Items that are NOT checked:

  • Files that were uploaded to Canvas.
  • Items you've linked to in Canvas.
  • Items added using LTI tools in Canvas.

Only items created using the Rich Content Editor (RCE) in Canvas are checked.  The RCE is the text editor available when you create items in Canvas (Pages, Assignments, Discussions, etc.).

Two Versions

There are two versions of the Accessibility Checker in Canvas.  Both work the same, the difference is in how many items they check at once, and how you access them.

Course Accessibility Checker

The Course Accessibility Checker allows you to check your entire course at once.

Note:  Currently, the Course Accessibility Checker will only check Assignments and Pages.  Sometime in April 2026 (the exact date has not been announcements yet), it will also begin checking Discussions, Announcements, and the Syllabus.

Rich Content Editor (RCE) Accessibility Checker

The RCE Accessibility Checker allows you to check one Canvas item at a time.  It works automatically while you're adding content to the RCE, so you can use it to make sure your content is accessible while you're creating it.
