To help protect our campus community, SVSU blocks certain file types from being sent through Outlook. These restrictions are in place to reduce the risk of viruses, malware, and other harmful content spreading through email. By limiting high-risk attachments, we help keep your computer, data, and account secure.
Why are some file types blocked?
Certain file types can contain malicious code that may run automatically or trick users into running it. These files are commonly used to spread viruses, ransomware, or other security threats. Blocking them is an important step in maintaining a safe email environment for everyone at SVSU.
Commonly blocked file types
Outlook may prevent you from sending or receiving attachments that fall into high-risk categories, including:
- Executable files: (.exe, .bat, .cmd)
- Script files: (.js, .vbs, .ps1)
- Programming-related files: (.vb, .jar, .msi)
- Macro-enabled files: (such as certain Word or Excel files containing macros)
This is not a complete list, but it includes some of the most common file types that are restricted due to security concerns.
