Respondus 4.0: Export Canvas Quiz to Word


Respondus 4.0 must be installed on the local drive C:\Users\userame\Documents on your computer or you will not be able to import the exam questions (Respondus Support Article Projects folder missing). If it is not installed in this location, you will need to uninstall and reinstall Respondus 4.0. The instructions for downloading Respondus 4.0 are found below. 


Download Respondus 4.0

Note: Respondus only works on Windows machines, it does not work on Mac computers

To download Respondus 4.0:

  • Access the ELMS page
  • Click on "Respondus 4.0"
  • Once you've authenticated, you will see the link to download Respondus 4.0 along with instructions on how to install it.
    • Note:  Step 2 gives you the information necessary to register Respondus 4.0.  This information needs to be exact, so please copy the information from the instruction page and then paste it into the application.

Export the Quiz from Canvas

Next, you will need to download the quiz from Canvas.  Learn How to export a quiz from Canvas.

Import the quiz to Respondus 4.0

1.       Select IMS QTI as the Current Personality from the drop-down menu.

2.       Click the Import Questions button.

3.       The Import Questions window is open, click Browse next to File name field. Click on the Downloads folder

4.       In the File type field (bottom-right) select Zipped IMS QTI package (.zip)

5.       Select the zipped folder you exported from Canvas

6.       Click Open.



Respondus 4.0 add the questions

1.       Select the radio button, "Create a new document, named: field". Then type in a short/descriptive name example PSYC 340 901-Exam 2 to paper.

2.       Click the Preview button, to verify the questions imported successfully. You will see the results in the Preview results window.

3.       Click Finish (this closes the window and opens the Edit tab)



Respondus 4.0 exporting questions to Word

1.       Click the Preview + Publish tab

2.       Click Print Options button

3.       Print Options window is open, click Save to File (bottom-middle button)
* You can set additional Print options where appropriate such as exam format, headers, randomize questions, and questions to be included.

4.       In the File Name field, type in a name for your file, Save as type should have Microsoft Word (.doc) (*doc) selected

5.       Select a location on your computer to save your file

6.       Click Save
